History

Racing at Watkins Glen started in 1948 on a 6.6-mile course over public roads. After a car left the road in the 1952 race and killed a seven-year-old spectator, racing moved to the hilltop southwest of town. That original road course is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Glen hosted the Formula One United States Grand Prix for 20 straight years, from 1961 to 1980. The Boot was added in 1971, taking the course from 2.35 to 3.377 miles.
