The layouts

Mid-Ohio has two main layouts. The 2.4-mile, 15-turn course uses the chicane and is common for motorcycles and club racing. The 13-turn, 2.258-mile course bypasses the chicane and is what major series like IndyCar, IMSA, and NASCAR have mostly used.

Named sections include the Keyhole, the Esses, Thunder Valley, and the Carousel. A separate start line on the back straight is used for rolling starts.

History

The track opened in 1962 as a 16-turn clockwise course. After one year, the slow Oak Tree Bend section in the northeast corner was removed and replaced with the Thunder Valley downhill straight. In 1990 a straight was paved through the chicane, which created the shorter layout.
